Honolulu Marathon 2003
32nd Honolulu Marathon, December 12, 2004
(My 5th (completed) Marathon)
For some reason, the question "why put yourself through this?" doesn't get asked too often. I'm not sure why that is, but I'm glad, because I haven't a clue. It's an exercise thing, but given that, why do the big thing on the 2nd Sunday in December? Maybe for the cameraderie, maybe for the thrill, maybe for the penance. Veni Vidi Bibendi. In 2004, the weather was perfect, the leaders broke course records, and my stiffness didn't even last until evening that day. I tangled with my own course record, 16 years later, and feeling strong enough to do as well as I did at 26 was a nice touch. I was shooting for 6:45, but I realized at about mile 15 that I was on schedule for a sub-15-minute average mile time, without running a single step. Once you break into the miles above 20, they still get longer, but this Marathon was over all too quickly.
